Background and Challenges
John graduated with a master’s degree in Biomedical and Health Informatics from Mahidol University in Thailand. Although his academic background demonstrated a strong foundation in technology and data, it had little direct connection to cybersecurity. Additionally, his professional experience at a public health agency initially appeared misaligned with the requirements for a cybersecurity program.
These factors made his application to NYIT (Vancouver)’s Master of Cybersecurity program a challenging case, as it required bridging significant gaps between his academic and professional profile and the program’s expectations.

Leveraging Unique Strengths
Fortunately, John shared with us that his daily work involved tasks related to network security, and he had been independently studying cybersecurity concepts for several years. Recognizing the value of this experience, we strategically emphasized his hands-on involvement in cybersecurity-related duties and his proactive self-learning throughout his application materials. This included incorporating official documentation from his employer verifying his cybersecurity tasks, along with detailed descriptions of relevant projects he had contributed to.
To further demonstrate his dedication and capability, we highlighted John’s strong academic foundation, including his outstanding IELTS (Academic) score of 7.5 (with 8.5 in both Reading and Listening), which he achieved in a single attempt. His language proficiency—honed through year of studying in an English-taught environment in Thailand—not only reflects his adaptability but also ensures he can thrive in an international academic setting. This exceptional language performance adds further credibility to his application, reinforcing his readiness for rigorous coursework.
We made sure to prominently highlight his self-driven study efforts and genuine passion for the field, effectively demonstrating his dedication and preparedness for a specialized academic program. To further strengthen his application, we supplemented it with comprehensive supporting materials—including task records and project references—that not only validated his practical expertise but also clearly aligned his profile with the program’s expectations and requirements.
Outcome
The strong application resulted in an unconditional offer from NYIT (Vancouver)’s Master of Cybersecurity program. This success exemplifies how strategic presentation and leveraging unique strengths can overcome challenges in the admissions process.
In January 2025, John officially began his studies, embarking on an exciting journey to further his expertise and open doors to a promising career in cybersecurity.
